Wintry jobs in the community garden

It was very windy and the hail stones were driving heavily across the garden but it didn’t put us off! The Wednesday Group, which is a care farming initiative at Fordhall, was keen to get outside and get on with the job of moving a variety of fruit bushes to a nice sunny spot in the community garden.

The task took most of the morning as it involved, (in between showers and hail) digging holes to a accommodate the bushes, moving compost from the bays to the holes and digging up the bushes from elsewhere. When all were in place we mulched the ground with cardboard which will keep the weeds from growing up around them. In the spring we will plant poached egg plants, (limnanthes douglasii) beneath them as a beneficial groundcover attracting pollinators) and between the bushes we hope to plant herbs which again will do the same thing.
Next week we will be moving the rhubarb plants, cutting back the autumn raspberry canes and sorting out the strawberry bed, moving some and taking off plants to sell.
