This autumn, we’re bringing a little of Arthur’s tradition back to the table with two special pre-theatre meals...

Arthur's meals at Fordhall Organic Farm

Some of you may remember, and some of you may have been had the pleasure of visiting, Arthur’s restaurant in the farmhouse.

Just over the hedge from where the tearoom now stands, Arthur himself used to serve organic meals to the public. All of his beef, pork and poultry was from the farm. These were barrels of wine, dancing on the tables and lively, late-night discussions.

Run by Arthur and his late wife, May, the Country Club welcomed thousands of visitors over the years from families to university groups, WIs and school trips. The income helped fund Arthur’s pioneering research into soil fertility and organic farming. Sadly, after May’s death, The Dairy and Country Club closed in the mid-1970s.

The restaurant continued in the farmhouse, where many people enjoyed a unique and mouth-watering experience. Joints of meat were placed on the table, and guests were simply handed a carving knife. Arthur’s motto was all about keeping things laid back… and of course, there was always home made custard!

Arthur didn’t just create excellent food; he used meal times to share stories and wisdom about his approach to farming: a model based on working with nature, protecting the life in our soils and recognising the vital connection between healthy soil, healthy food and a healthy planet.

The same philosophy lives on in our tearoom today. Serving up organic food, locally sourced where we can, and a place to come together! All the profits go back into the community work we do week by week, all year round.

This autumn, we’re bringing a little of Arthur’s tradition back to the table with two special pre-theatre meals, just as Arthur himself might have enjoyed!

The menu may be a little different from those days, but the spirit remains the same. Join us in our Straw Lodge for a delicious one-course meal, followed by hot drinks and homemade shortbreads!
