When Spring Stirs
January 30, 2026
Spring doesn’t arrive all at once. It quietly rises from the soil, temperatures soften, and life beneath our feet wakes up.

On a living farm, no two springs are ever the same, because the land itself is not one thing, but many. Our pastures are a montage of grasses, clovers, buttercups, chicory, and red clovers. Each plant releases its own chemistry into the soil and air, changing as roots reconnect and begin trading nutrients again. What looks like grass is, is really, a remarkable collaboration.
Clovers host bacteria that pull nitrogen from the air and turn it into food for the field. Deep-rooting herbs mine minerals from far below andl ift them into the grazing layer. Fungal networks thread between roots, extending the reach of plants and redistributing water and nutrients underground.
Different plants feed different insects, which in turn support birds and wildlife. Livestock benefit from varied diets, while soil microbes play vital roles, breaking down fibre, and storing carbon. Each spring, the balance shifts. One year clover flourishes; another, chicory rides the wind and colours the fields.
Recently, generous spots of sunshine have overstayed it’s welcome, wrapping across fields as we approach the lambing season. Before the fields fill with new life, there is a moment of stillness, a chance to reflect on 20years of community-ownership. If 8,000 people hadn’t come together in 2006 to save this farm, none of this new life would be here today. Every lamb born, every wildflower emerging, is a reminder of what shared hope makes possible.
This February half-term, we welcome a younger generation to our Community Garden, “Giggle’s and Grow”. Designed especially for children aged3–5, it’ll be taking place on Wednesday 18th February, 10am–12pm. The two-hour session offers families an immersive morning in nature, helping children build confidence, curiosity and a connection to the outdoors.
